Effectively Supporting Clients in Between Sessions

I am very aware, as an outpatient therapist, that I only see my clients at most 2 hours a week, and that is rare.  It is mostly only 1 time a week for an hour at most.  That means my clients spend more time outside of our session than with me.

Being aware of this and working with your clients to ensure that the time they spend outside of sessions is productive is vital to effective trauma treatment.  Over the years, I have learned that sometimes my client and I will knock this out of the park and other times it will be an upstream battle without a paddle.

I often hear clients say, “It will just take time.” When I hear this saying I am quick to add my perspective, “It is not just time that heals all things, it is what you do in that time that makes the difference.”

In this week’s vlog, I share a couple of tips and tricks I have learned over the years to help you help your clients make the most of the time in between sessions.

  1. Thanks for this very useful vlog, Nina. Getting the right boundaries for clients to feel supported and safe is well worth thinking carefully about.
